Russell Survives Baku Chaos to Deny Verstappen in Photo Finish

George Russell converted the largest pole margin of the 2026 season into a third victory of the year, holding off Max Verstappen by 0.196 seconds in the closest green-flag finish on the calendar for more than two decades. Isack Hadjar completed a Red Bull Racing double podium in third, while Kimi Antonelli limited championship damage with a recovery from sixteenth on the grid to fifth after a qualifying crash that had thrown Mercedes' weekend into doubt.

Qualifying Sets the Tone

Russell had already stamped his authority on the Baku City Circuit across practice, and in Q3 he delivered a lap 0.837 seconds clear of Charles Leclerc's Ferrari - the biggest pole advantage of the season. Oscar Piastri joined Leclerc on the front three rows for McLaren, with Isack Hadjar and Lando Norris close behind on a grid where the top ten was covered by barely more than a second.

The story of Saturday, though, was Antonelli. The championship leader hit the wall at Turn 1 during the opening segment of qualifying and was eliminated in Q1, leaving him sixteenth on Sunday with a damaged car and a mountain to climb. Norris, eager to rebound after a difficult run of races, looked well placed to challenge from the second row. Carlos Sainz, meanwhile, was demoted from ninth to fourteenth for a yellow-flag infringement, and Sergio Perez carried a qualifying penalty for impeding Piastri without changing his position at the back of the field.

The Start: Russell Leads as Red Bull Advances

Race day brought a split between medium and soft starters among the front runners. Russell, Norris, Pierre Gasly, Verstappen and Franco Colapinto chose the harder compound, while Leclerc, Piastri, Hadjar, Lewis Hamilton and Oliver Bearman opted for the softs in pursuit of early gains.

Russell made a clean getaway from pole and quickly built a lead of more than a second. Piastri moved into second on the opening lap, but the Red Bull Racing pair were on the move. Hadjar repassed Norris for fourth before Verstappen picked off Norris and Leclerc in quick succession, leaving the Dutchman third and hunting the McLaren ahead.

Antonelli's afternoon began in the wrong direction as he slipped to seventeenth before regrouping. At the front, Russell looked in control with Piastri holding second under pressure, while Hadjar sat within a second of his team-mate and posted the fastest lap as Red Bull closed on McLaren.

Safety Cars and Strategy Shake the Order

Lance Stroll was the first retirement, stopping with a water pressure issue on Lap 9 without triggering a full Safety Car. The race neutralised properly when Alexander Albon locked up at Turn 6 and found the wall in his Williams, deploying the Safety Car and sending the leaders into the pits for fresh tyres.

Red Bull executed a sharp double stack to keep Verstappen ahead of Hadjar, but the restart brought more drama. Approaching Turn 1, Colapinto locked up and collected Gasly, with Norris caught in the chain reaction. All three retired, and a second Safety Car period followed to clear the debris.

In the Racing Bulls camp, Arvid Lindblad tagged Liam Lawson at the restart, leaving Lawson furious with his team-mate over the radio. When racing resumed again, Russell kept Verstappen behind at the front, but Piastri - who had been in podium contention for much of the afternoon - locked up at Turn 1 and spun down to fifteenth.

Antonelli Recovers as the Lead Battle Intensifies

The chaos elevated Antonelli into the top six and gave him a clear target in Hamilton's Ferrari. With eight laps remaining, the Mercedes driver passed Hamilton on the main straight to take fifth, having already picked off Lawson, Albon, Sainz and Esteban Ocon earlier in the stint.

Russell, meanwhile, was fighting more than tyre life alone. He had brushed the wall at Turn 15 mid-race and reported odd tyre behaviour, and as Verstappen sat within a few tenths the Mercedes driver also lost turbo boost after lifting for a late yellow flag when Valtteri Bottas crashed his Cadillac. On the final lap Verstappen pulled alongside down the start-finish straight, but Russell held the inside line to the flag by less than two tenths of a second.

Hadjar secured his second podium of the season in third, with Leclerc fourth and Hamilton sixth after a lonely run once Antonelli had passed. Arvid Lindblad beat Ocon to seventh on the line, and Haas scored both cars in the points for the first time since Monaco as Bearman finished ninth ahead of Sainz.

Race Takeaway

Baku lived up to its reputation as the calendar's great disruptor, but Russell's weekend was the opposite of a lottery win. From practice through pole and the chequered flag, the Mercedes driver was the class of the field until Verstappen dragged him into a sprint finish that will sit among the season's defining moments. Verstappen still hunts a first victory of 2026, yet this was proof Red Bull Racing can threaten on pure race pace when the Safety Car periods fall their way.

For Mercedes, the result trims Antonelli's championship lead to 66 points after the Italian salvaged fifth from a grid slot that would have spelled a much costlier afternoon. Norris's retirement from a promising position is another setback for McLaren in a year when Piastri also tumbled out of the points after a late lock-up, leaving both drivers to regroup before the triple-header continues in Singapore.

Hadjar's podium underlines Red Bull's depth behind Verstappen, while Haas's double points finish offers a timely boost for a team that had struggled to repeat its early-season form. The paddock now turns east with the championship still Mercedes' to lose, but Baku has shown once again that no advantage is safe until the final metre of the pit straight.
