Antonelli Controls COTA From Pole as Ferrari and Red Bull Fight for the Podium

Kimi Antonelli converted pole position into a commanding United States Grand Prix victory at the Circuit of the Americas, leading home Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen in a race decided as much in the pit lane as on the timing screens. The Mercedes driver stretched his championship advantage with a flawless one-stop strategy while Ferrari and Red Bull Racing traded blows for the remaining podium places behind him.

The Start Sets the Tone

Antonelli made the ideal getaway from the front row, but the opening lap was anything but straightforward behind him. Max Verstappen lost ground off the line as Charles Leclerc and the Red Bull driver scrapped through the COTA esses, allowing the Mercedes to build a buffer before the field settled into tyre management mode.

By the end of Lap 1, Antonelli was more than two seconds clear. From that moment the race became a question of whether anyone could disrupt his rhythm rather than whether he could hold the lead.

One Stop Versus Two

Mercedes had committed Antonelli to the medium compound at the start while several of his closest rivals, including Leclerc and Verstappen, began on the softer rubber. The Italian's race plan was always a single stop onto the hard tyre, and the long first stint gave him track position when others were forced into their second visits to the pits.

Leclerc emerged as the nearest threat after the strategy phase shook out. The Ferrari driver kept Verstappen honest through the middle stint, and their fight for second place became the subplot of an afternoon that otherwise belonged to the leader. Verstappen, carrying minor issues on his Red Bull according to team radio, could not find a way past Leclerc when it mattered and had to settle for third.

Late Virtual Safety Car

A Virtual Safety Car period in the closing stages compressed the field briefly and trimmed Antonelli's advantage, but the Mercedes driver had enough in hand to cruise to the chequered flag. He crossed the line 13.078 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with Verstappen a further four seconds back in third.

Lewis Hamilton added useful Ferrari points in fourth, while Lando Norris faded to fifth once his tyres went off after a long second stint. Isack Hadjar scored another solid result for Red Bull Racing in sixth, ahead of Oscar Piastri, George Russell, Liam Lawson, and Pierre Gasly.

Valtteri Bottas, Franco Colapinto, and Oliver Bearman joined the list of non-finishers on a demanding Texas afternoon.

Race Takeaway

Antonelli's ninth win of 2026 underlines why he arrives in Mexico City with the Drivers' Championship within reach. Austin was not a lucky break or a opportunistic undercut; it was a measured performance from lights to flag that punished rivals who needed two stops to keep pace.

For Leclerc, a second consecutive second place keeps Ferrari in the fight for podiums even if the title conversation has narrowed. Verstappen's third place salvaged important points on a day when a poor start and strategy compromise left Red Bull Racing chasing rather than leading.

Russell's eighth place was a quiet afternoon for Mercedes' second car, but Antonelli's 25 points still extend the gap that matters most. With the Mexican Grand Prix next on the calendar, the championship could be settled as soon as the following Sunday if the Italian keeps this form.
