Antonelli Wins at Spa as Russell’s Title Bid Collapses on Lap One

Kimi Antonelli claimed his first victory since Monaco with a measured win at Spa-Francorchamps, beating Charles Leclerc and extending his championship lead to 50 points after George Russell’s race ended in the gravel on the opening lap. Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull Racing, while Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari despite a five-second penalty for the first-lap contact that ended Russell’s afternoon.

The Start: Verstappen Strikes, Then Russell Falls

Antonelli arrived at Spa with pole position and the weight of a championship lead that had narrowed after Silverstone. When the lights went out, the Mercedes driver initially held the lead through Eau Rouge, but Max Verstappen used a superior launch and the slipstream through Raidillon to snatch first place before Les Combes.

The response was immediate. Antonelli reclaimed the lead down the Kemmel Straight, re-establishing control at the front while Verstappen and Charles Leclerc settled into pursuit. Behind them, the title picture fractured within seconds.

Russell had lost ground through the opening sector and attempted to recover positions around Lewis Hamilton at Turn 6. The Mercedes driver darted across the track on the outside of his former team-mate, the pair made contact, and Russell was left stranded in the gravel. The Safety Car was deployed before the opening lap was complete, ending Russell’s afternoon and handing Antonelli a significant advantage in the championship battle.

Hamilton continued but would later receive a five-second penalty for causing the collision. The incident set the tone for a race defined as much by strategy and recovery as by outright pace at the front.

Safety Car Restart and the Front Fight

Once racing resumed at the start of Lap 5, Antonelli held firm at the front through the restart. Verstappen remained close enough to keep the leader honest, while Leclerc moved into second after the Dutchman’s early charge faded.

The leading trio ran in tight formation before Antonelli gradually opened a margin of more than two seconds. Verstappen, running an older-specification rear wing, still found a way past Leclerc at Les Combes and briefly threatened to join a genuine three-way fight for victory.

Further back, Hamilton and Oscar Piastri traded positions on the restart before the Ferrari driver settled into fourth. Racing Bulls enjoyed a strong opening phase as Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad climbed into the top seven, while Franco Colapinto led an Alpine charge in the midfield.

Leclerc, Piastri and the Investigation

The order began to shift when Leclerc and Piastri fought over the final podium place. The pair made contact, flicking carbon fibre onto the circuit and triggering further scrutiny from the stewards. Piastri insisted Leclerc had not left enough room; Leclerc, meanwhile, faced repeated pressure from Hamilton, who repeatedly told his team he had more pace and wanted a way past.

Hamilton eventually cleared both McLaren drivers and briefly set the fastest lap of the race, but his afternoon was complicated by the earlier penalty and a later unsafe release in the pits that struck a Ferrari mechanic, who was thankfully unhurt. Leclerc was ultimately cleared of any penalty for the Piastri contact, removing one potential obstacle to a Ferrari fightback.

The Virtual Safety Car Gambit

The strategic contest changed on Lap 18 when Verstappen became the first of the front-runners to stop, switching from medium to hard tyres. A brief Virtual Safety Car followed, and Antonelli covered the undercut one lap later, rejoining ahead of the Red Bull driver but still trailing the Ferrari and McLaren group on track.

The decisive moment arrived two laps later when another Virtual Safety Car neutralised the field. Ferrari double-stacked both drivers, and the timing worked perfectly for Leclerc, who emerged ahead of Antonelli to seize the effective lead. Norris, still on his opening hard tyres, temporarily held the on-track lead before Leclerc passed him on the Kemmel Straight.

Antonelli cleared Norris shortly afterwards, but the gap to Leclerc stood at approximately 2.6 seconds. What followed was a patient pursuit rather than an immediate counterattack, with Mercedes trusting tyre management and Antonelli’s late-stint pace to undo Ferrari’s undercut.

Antonelli Hunts Down Leclerc

Leclerc initially looked capable of defending his advantage. His hard tyres were two laps fresher than Antonelli’s, and the Ferrari maintained a lead of more than two seconds through the middle of the final stint.

The Mercedes driver gradually closed the gap as the race entered its final 12 laps. Leclerc reported problems with his gearshifts between first and second, and by Lap 34 Antonelli was within one second with Overtake Mode available.

He stayed with Leclerc through Eau Rouge, gained rapidly in the slipstream and completed a clean pass at the end of the Kemmel Straight. Once ahead, Antonelli immediately pulled clear, though Leclerc refused to surrender and remained within a second for several laps before the margin widened to 1.952 seconds at the flag.

Verstappen secured third after a disciplined recovery from his early lead, finishing 11.586 seconds behind the winner. Hamilton took fourth from Piastri in the closing laps, while Isack Hadjar and Lando Norris recovered strongly from back-of-grid penalties to finish sixth and seventh respectively.

Midfield Battles and Retirements

Gabriel Bortoleto scored for Audi in eighth, giving the team consecutive points finishes. Lindblad and Colapinto completed the top ten after a frantic fight for the final point that also involved Pierre Gasly, Lawson and Nico Hülkenberg.

Bearman finished 14th for Haas, with the Williams pair of Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz 15th and 16th. Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas and Fernando Alonso were the last of the classified finishers.

Lance Stroll retired with a suspected gearbox issue, while Sergio Pérez joined Russell on the list of non-finishers after Cadillac reported a broken suspension. Russell’s Lap One retirement was the defining championship moment of the weekend, opening a 50-point gap to Antonelli with Hungary next on the calendar.

Hamilton’s fourth place moved him to 159 points and second in the standings, while Leclerc’s runner-up finish lifted Ferrari’s confidence after a strong strategic afternoon.

For Russell, the result was a devastating setback in a title fight that had appeared finely balanced only a fortnight earlier. A collision with his former team-mate on the opening lap ended any chance of damage limitation and left Mercedes relying entirely on Antonelli to carry their championship challenge.

Mercedes increased their Constructors’ Championship lead to 358 points, with Ferrari closing to 285 after a double-points finish. McLaren remained third on 195, while Red Bull moved to 151 after Verstappen’s podium and Hadjar’s recovery drive.
